Who's Who
There are too many people involved with the Lighthouse now to give everyone a bio but heres a few of the key people you may meet on a music journey with us
Lucy Knight was elected as our new Chair of the Management Board at our AGM in January 2011. Paignton born and bred, by day she's a project manager and mum of 7. She's also one of the few volunteers at the Lighthouse who's not a dedicated musician, although she can still remember her Grade 1 guitar exam piece if pushed. Lucy got involved originally with the Rock After School project as a parent, taking a break and coming back when the Lighthouse began to need more hands on deck to control the paperwork and planning side. When she's not at work or at the Lighthouse, she unwinds with Galaxy Quest, AC/DC, Terry Pratchett and the occasional spot of Mozart.
Mark Wilkins is the man behind the idea of the Devon Music Collective. Having moved down from Reading seven years ago we feel he's now earned an honorary Devonianship for services to the community. A keen guitarist from the age of 14, when he recognised its popularity with the opposite sex, Mark left music behind to take on some big jobs with some international blue chip financial institutions in the city. Feeling he'd had enough of wearing a suit, he bought a new guitar and, with the loan of a council building, Rock After School, our founding project was born. Now a new Dad at the age of (nearly) 50 Mark enjoys changing nappies, mixing baby food and sleep.
Jess Slade is our volunteer powerhouse making sure everyone who comes in and gives up their time at the Lighthouse is happy doing what they are doing. At just 23 Jess works for BCTV running Torbay's VTalent initiative. Jess started by bringing young people into the Lighthouse to help with the refurb rolling up her sleeves to help out with the painting. We figured that wasnt enough and Jess now sits on our Management Board which along with rugby and James May is 'very exciting!!'.
Next up, a shameless plug for Backhand!! A very lovely group of young people (not to mention the Bays BEST rockabilly band!) all of whom have played a huge role in the work that goes on at the Lighthouse. On drums (from the left) we have Oli Syrett the longest serving Drummer at Rock After School, double bass player Grace Staples who is the youngest person on our Management Board and supports vocalist Naomi Pearce as Vice Chair, organise the Youth Board, guitarist Jack Staples is the quiet silent type with the deadly riff and the punchy lyric.

Nick Hallam is our Music Director. At the Lighthouse we like our tutors to be professional musicians who have experience of the music industry and Nick is the perfect mix. As a Community Music Leader Nick holds Master degrees in Music Practice and Performance and Sound Studies and as a musician he has performed globally with his band Crunchbird as well as a solo noise experimentation artist most recently in Japan and at the New Jersey Festival of Performing Arts. With Hendrix style shredding Nick is the tutor that causes young jaws to drop and with a vast knowledge of contemporary music is instrumental in enhancing their music education.
